Nail fungus is common and can be bothersome for both health and cosmetic reasons. It may affect a single nail or spread to several, causing discolouration, thickening or crumbling edges.
It usually starts as a yellow or white spot just under the tip of the nail. In mild cases it may cause no discomfort, but in some cases it can lead to painful, thickened nails. It is also known medically as onychomycosis or tinea unguium.
Toenail fungus is far more common than fingernail fungus.
